Puu'Oo is a cinder cone located on the flanks of Kilauea (tan on the left). This is a spatter cone erupting from the side of Pu'Oo. It had been the recent focus of Kilauea Eruptions in the late 1990's.
Further down slope, the Pahoehoe lavas flows typical of Kilauea.
So unreal for this Dutch flatlander...
ReplyDeleteWell, it is deceptively 'flat' where I live. But I do get to see my favorite local mountain most mornings (See previous post) when I walk my dog before going to work.
ReplyDeleteYou used to active volcnoes in northern Europe....but alas, they are long gone.......
It's an amazing sight to see the lava in person.
ReplyDeleteYes, and you finally realize how hot 1200 degrees celsius is.......until you are standing next to an flow, the temperature of basaltic lava is just a number that you've read about.
ReplyDeleteThere is something almost 'other-worldly' about that hot lava; never seen it for real.
