The Weekly Volcano #2: Black Butte, California

Another Winter-Summer contrast from the Mt Shasta region.  Black Butte is a  monogenetic Cinder Cone associated with Mt Shasta, located on it's lower slopes along the road to the ski area.
Notice the swirling clouds in the winter view.  We had an interesting experience recently trying to photography moving clouds with the D-40.  I'll write more about that next week.

  1. Love the top shot with that cloud formation. I'm sure a weather man could put a name to it with an explanation.

  2. Your comment reminded me that I do have an Audubon Society field Guide to North American Weather. We often do have interesting clouds around here, and I never remember that I have this book. I'll look through our photos of the last three years and see if we can put together a cloud series.

The interesting clouds around Black Butte are Stratus Cloud (a category that includes all low lying clouds and fog). There is probably a special sub-category for this one. If I find it I'll let you all know.

  3. I did meteorology when I was flying in the RAF, but memory has dimmed.

  4. First shot is great. On the mountains the mist sometimes get down to the valleys but here the valley is all around the peak!

  5. The unusual clouds are exactly the reason we stopped on our way to go skiing. California has great fog; Colorado, not so good.
