I haven't started posting photos from our New Mexico Trip. But we begin today with a question for John @ 'I Love Old Cameras'. Not that you should necessarily know anything about USAF aircraft:
It was too large to be a fighter...perhaps some type of short range bomber?
It's only a two seater......
So while at White Sands we visited the White Sands Missile Range Museum.
They had a 'missile farm' outside, along with a few more conventional aircraft including this one, and Werner von Braun personal airpalne provided by the US government.
Still with the Pilots name:
Any ideas?
More on the History of White Sands Missile Range later.
Hi; it's an F4 Phantom, and I think it's quite a late variant by the nose profile and the sensor under the nose. The Phantom's were originally designed for the US Navy, which is why it has the large arrestor hook under the tail, this was for 'catching the wire' when it landed on the carrier deck. The Phantom was one of the main aircraft used in the Vietnam war.
ReplyDeleteThganks John, I thought you would know. It seemd large for a fighter, but on the onther hand, I'm not sure I've ever been that close to one before.
