Red Rocks Friday

Not the Reddest of the Front Range, but the ones located closest to my home
at Eldorado Canyon State Park.

If you are familiar with rock climbing, this area is listed as a world-class climbing location.

And when I worked there one summer, I did meet people from a number of different countries.

If I can get some good climbing photos this summer, we'll make a return visit!

In the meantime, watch out for the spring runoff!

New Perspectives on Monday

I'm starting a new series featuring some of my favorite landscapes.

I am trying to remind myself what I used to do that is currently missing from my
Colorado Photo Experience.
I used to have a certain perspective.........

Arches National Park, Moab, Utah; about an 8 hour drive from my home.

Sundays in Patagonia

Glacier Huemul, Argentina

A Huemul is actually a miniature deer native to Argentine Patagonia.  Now very rare and endangered because of predation by feral dogs.  The Glacier of the same name also appears to be 'endangered'.

Red Rocks Friday

We travel a little farther south along the Front Range to find our next spectacular outcrop of the
Fountain Formation.  This time at Roxborough State Park:

Here the same rock formation that we saw last week forms Fins.
We'll see the best developed Fins in the area next week.......

I was taking note for a self-guided tour I was making for a class that I taught.
So Donald took the pictures

More Red Rocks coming on Fridays

Weekly Volcano #17: Piton de la Fournaise, Reunion Island

Piton was active in August 1998 when I visited.  Unlike security at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, people were free to wander inside the crater as long as lava flows were erupting in a passive manner.
A few tourists did get 'gassed' though.

Celebrate Worldwide Pinhole Day

Celebrate Worldwide Pinhole Day on April 25, 2010.

And to get you inspired, a Holga Panorama (6X9) pinhole image :

Below the camera.  I hadn't mentioned our Christmas photo swag........this was part of it.

f/135 with an aperture of 0.3mm.

The Holga Panorama Pinhole is a good place to start if you don't want to build you own!

Sundays in Patagonia

"Jack Ass " Penguins come by their name because of the braying sound they make.
Donald loves these guys.  When we were in South Africa in 1998 we had to go to the coast to see their 'cousins'.  An so we visited these little guys near Punta Arenas, Chile.

A Tour of the Red Rocks: Revised

This is actually called Red Rocks Park. Owned by the City of Denver, and home of the famous Red Rocks Amphitheater.

And below one more of my scanning 'mistakes'.  I've shown some versions before.
As A reminder I scanned the transparencies on the reflective setting.
Which do you prefer?

I will be continuing the 'red rocks' series by showing several more red rock locations throughout the western US.

A Question for John

I haven't started posting photos from our New Mexico Trip.  But we begin today with a question for John @ 'I Love Old Cameras'.  Not that you should necessarily know anything about USAF aircraft:
It was too large to be a fighter...perhaps some type of short range bomber?
It's only a two seater......
So while at White Sands we visited the White Sands Missile Range Museum.
They had a 'missile farm' outside, along with a few more conventional aircraft including this one, and Werner von Braun personal airpalne provided by the US government.
Still with the Pilots name:
Any ideas?
More on the History of White Sands Missile Range later.

Weekly Volcano #15: Starting April with one more from Mt Shasta

Haven't run out of Mt Shasta photos yet.  I think I have enough to carry me through June.

Donald used to use film before going to the 'Dark Side'

Saturday in Patagonia

Sorry I was late selecting the photo for my post..........
Here one of the ubiquitous Guanacos, a wild relative of the Alpaca, Llama, and Vicuna.
Once near extinction, they are everywhere.
Our only surviving wild member of the Camel
in the hemisphere where I believe Camel's originated?

Faith on Film: Clean Feet for Maundy Thursday

Not  very religious example...but I wanted to capture the concept.
And so I share a foot with you, bathed in the headwaters of the Snake River
at Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

And of course, a classic view of what the area is more famous for........

(These are scans of very old photos)
