Memorial Park, Colorado Springs

The Host for the Balloon Rally, Colorado Springs is also the home of the Air Force Academy and 4 other military installations, including NORAD and Fort Carson.  We'll take a closer look at some of the Memorials for Veteran's Day in November........

Scanner Auto Crop?

More from the Balloon Festival, this time 35mm.  But my scanner cropped the darker areas.  Has anyone else ever had this happen?

Last Comment on Loss of Detail

Our Final E100VS vs Provia 100F: Note the Loss of Detail

Can you tell which is which? E100VS or Provia 100F?

More on Loss of Detail............

Bill brought up an interesting point yesterday, so I pulled up another example:

Fuji Provia 100F Above, E100VS Below.  All I can say is that obviously the emphasis on vivid saturation of the color has a strong affect on detail, especially in the red/orange/pink range of shades.  E100GX did not have that problem (e.g. yesterday's posting).

The Final Test!

So why am I going through all of this?  Because when I travel to places like Patagonia, I'll probably want to shoot color slide film.  When my favorite E100GX (which I used in Patagonia) was discontinued, my search began.

The Final Test is provided by my Deep Orange Oriental Poppies:

First Provia 100F:  Lookin' Good!

Next, Kodak E100VS: A bit over saturated, but that's what VS does!

And a Flash from the past,  2009 Kodak E100GX:  Still the Best!

Film Test: Brown

I'd like to say that my deck looks as good as the image below (E100VS), but that would be lying.  Provia 100F (Above) is the truer color rendering.

An Aside: Fate of the "Pod Person"

Yes, it grew and we ate it!

(These are digital images and not a part of the film test, although I have done a digital vs. film test in the past).

I never liked the large purple eggplants, but this little guy was tasty!  two more end of season pods are growing.  I hope we don't get an early frost!

Meet the Purple Pod Person

I decided to try growing an Eggplant this year, because in case you hadn't noticed, I love nightshades....But it also provides a nice test of Purple.....

Provia 100F: Slightly different perspective, but truer color over all.

My husband gave the Eggplant the nickname Pod Person in one of his postings.

Now E100VS: A bit closer and the purple a bit darker........

Honoring Ambassador Chris Stevens

We didn't mention Sept 11th yesterday.  Sometimes I just like to spend a quiet day..............But in Light of the Ambassador's death on September 11th, defending the rights of those who killed him:

Honoring Ambassador Stevens and the staff who died with him, and all diplomats everywhere,

Check the White Balance!

Fuji Provia 100F (Above) Kodak E100VS (Below):

A slight difference in the whites, but the lighting may have changed just a bit while I was changing the film back...........

Fuji Provia 100F: It only Gets Better!

The colors were so similar that I had a hard time keeping track of which image I was cropping.....First the Fuji Provia 100F Icelandic Poppy:

And Now the E100VS Icelandic Poppy:

Which do You prefer?  Can you really say one is better than the other?  I can't.

Film Tests Continue............Fuji Provia 100 May be the Winner!

The CR 200 was so bad that I could not see the point in posting more comparisons.......But we may have found a replacement for E100VS/GX:

Fuji Provia 100 (above) is honestly truer to the natural color.  Yes, the E100VS pops more as the VS (vivid saturation) implies.  But for our comparison we really are looking for the more natural color.....

Film Tests Continue..........Rollei CR 200

The Film Tests continue and this one is really painful to look at:

This Datura is a White flower.........But not according to this CR 200.  Obviously it is a very warm film, but this is way out there in terms of color balance.

I'm not a Photoshop expert, but was able to perform a reasonable color correction (above).

But I still prefer the more natural (if colder) color balance of E100VS (below).  In other words, I do want my white flowers to actually be white!  And i don't want to spend a lot of time in Photoshop trying to get there......
